(Sanskrit) Material cause or substrate. In Indian philosophy (e.g., Nyaya-Vaisheshika), it refers to the substance out of which an effect is produced (e.g., clay for a pot). In Buddhism, it is one of the links in the chain of Dependent Origination, referring to "clinging" or "attachment."
